Opportunities for a bimodal approach” in NeuroImage.
Together with Koen Cuypers from KU Leuven, Anouk Marsman recently published the review article “Transcranial magnetic stimulation and magnetic resonance spectroscopy: Opportunities for a bimodal approach” in NeuroImage. To see the whole article, click HERE.
They summarized commonly applied techniques and measures in combined TMS-MRS studies and provide an overview of studies performed in healthy and patient populations. TMS and MRS reveal complementary and comprehensive information on brain metabolism. The combination of TMS and MRS can be used to evaluate alterations in metabolite levels, in particular glutamate and GABA, following interventional TMS, as well as identify the interplay between brain metabolism and excitation, inhibition or facilitation.
Considering the ongoing technical developments in the fields of TMS and MRS, combined studies hold future promise for more precise investigations of brain network interactions, neurotransmission and energetics.
