On Tuesday 17 September 2019, Associate Professor at the University of Lisboa, Portugal is giving a lecture entitled: "Electric fields in the human central nervous system: computational models of two non-invasive techniques".
Biography
Pedro Cavaleiro Miranda obtained a BSc and a PhD in Physics from the University of Sussex, UK and an MSc in Computer Science from UCL, UK. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon, where he teaches Biomedical Engineering, and a researcher at the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering (IBEB), in the same university. His expertise lies in the calculation of the electric field induced by non-invasive neural stimulation techniques, such as TMS and tDCS, based on realistic computational models of the human brain and spinal cord. The ultimate aim of this work is to predict stimulation outcomes in individual subjects by means of multi-scale models that include information about neurons and neural networks. He is also involved in modeling the non-invasive application of electric fields to treat brain tumors (TTFields), with the purpose of optimizing treatment protocols. His group works in collaboration with national international partners and two medical device companies.
IBEB
The Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering (IBEB) is a research unit of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. IBEB was founded in 1992, and its activities are focused on research and postgraduate teaching. Research carried out at IBEB covers Biophyiscs and Biomedical Engineering approaches to understand some human health disorders. IBEB’s scientific activity is organized into 4 transversal research lines, distributed by its 14 Ph.D. members. IBEB contributes for the MSc and PhD programs in Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics of the Faculty of Ciências of Universidade de Lisboa and participates on other post-graduate courses within Ciências or in collaboration with other schools of ULisboa. About 60 MSc theses and 30 PhD theses have been produced so far.
